Am I a Modern Day Heretic?

| February 13, 2013

The other day, just as I do every few weeks to say hello and catch up, I phoned my dad who lives quite some distance from me and is turning 90 this year.

Fortunately my father’s mind is as sharp as ever and he’s in remarkably good shape for a man his age.

He’s always been very enthusiastic and supportive about my work, my writing, and my public speaking. However because he’s always relied on allopathic medicine and conventional doctors to treat any illnesses or ailments, he really has a very limited understanding of the focus of my work, which is all about holistic approaches to healing and wellness, and empowering people with knowledge and information on how they can most effectively take back responsibility for their own health and healing.

As soon as he picked up the phone, the first thing my dad said to me was that he had recently read an article in a newsletter to which he’s subscribed and wanted to get my opinion on it.

He then proceeded to read several excerpts from this article to me over the phone. The gist of it was that any purported benefits of internal detoxification practices, such as colon and liver cleansing and the like, were completely unfounded according to science, and that such protocols conveyed no health benefits whatsoever. The article went on to say that our bodies are equipped with a natural, innate capacity for cleansing themselves, and that being proactive about doing anything else above and beyond those inborn processes was at best a waste of time, and at worst potentially dangerous.

So with barely a how do you do he blurts this out to me, all of which is basically utterly contrary to the bases of my work and the information in my book.

And then says to me, “so how do you respond to that?”

Talk about throwing down the gauntlet!

I mean gee whiz! I had just phoned him to say hi, how’s it going, what’s new, how’s the weather etc, and hardly expected to be put on the spot like that to defend myself, my research, my writings and my views.

I felt totally blindsided by suddenly being confronted with arguments from a scientific source he obviously trusts that are essentially diametrically opposed to my own viewpoints.

Scrambling to string some words together in an intelligent, cogent and cohesive fashion, here, as best as I can recall, are a few of the more salient points I made to him:

  • Our bodies have evolved over the course of millions of years in a world that has been totally free of industrial pollution.

  • However just during the past century or two there have been thousands upon thousands of toxic synthetic petrochemicals introduced into our planet’s air, water and soil.

  • Much of the air we breathe has become polluted.

  • Much of the water we drink has become befouled.

  • Much of the soil in which the food we eat is grown has become radically depleted and heinously contaminated.

  • Toxic petrochemicals are now showing up not only in the tissues of adult humans, but also in the bodies of newborns, in placental fluid, in breast milk, and in the systems of animals living in some of the remotest, most pristine places left on earth.

  • Industrial chemicals that are manufactured may be tested for environmental and human health safety prior to being licensed for sale. However there are now so many of these kinds of chemicals present in our world that they are bound to interact with one another in a kind of synergetic cocktail or soup, and NO ONE knows what deleterious effects these substances may be having on our health as they combine and coalesce in conjunction with one another.

  • Our bodies are indeed imbued with a variety of innate cleansing organs, systems and processes. However they were NEVER DESIGNED to cope with the levels of toxicity that are present in the world and in our bodies today.

  • Because of this, our bodies need all the help they can get to support their own processes of detoxification.

  • I am an acknowledged revolutionary and make no effort whatsoever to hide the fact that much of the information I research, write and speak about is counter to the conventional ‘wisdom’ available today.

  • Galileo Galilei, the 16th century Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher, was also a revolutionary. His position was that the earth was not the center of the universe, (which was the conventional wisdom at the time) but rather that the sun was the center of a system of planets which orbited around it.

  • Galileo was tried by the Inquistion, branded a heretic, forced to recant his heretical views, and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.

(I actually said a lot more to my dad during that conversation, but you get the idea.)

After we hung up I wished there was a way to communicate more to him about all this, and I spent some time trying to write him a letter.

But before long I abandoned that idea and instead sent him an email composed of a simple, single sentence quotation:

The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking with which we created them.”

– Albert Einstein

    Hello Linda,

Since living in WA, I have nearly ceased to share my enthusiasm, encouragement or knowledge of health with those who prefer to remain asleep. Many choose to remain addicted to their “food” choices and remain oblivious to the fact that what they are consuming actually has no food value and is in any way contributing to their health problems.

I actually wrote to mention that I spoke with Danica at Marlene’s this Tuesday; regarding the toxic exposure the previous week. She said she was also sick for 3 days after and went to have an oxygen treatment. It turns out the person cleaning pushed the gas button instead of the fan ?…and it was indeed gas fumes we were breathing!!(propane or natural?) Any detox ideas?

    • Linda Zurich says:

Hi Janet, nice to hear from you again.

Oh dear! I’m so sorry to hear that Danica got sick. :(

There are SO many ideas for detoxing in my book. If you don’t have a copy you can read the table of contents here:

Here are a few of my favorite approaches for general detox: baths with epsom salt, sea salt or magnesium chloride flakes added are fantastic. Adding powdered bentonite clay to baths is another powerful way to cleanse the body, as is taking hydrated clay internally. Sweating is another great way to facilitate increased elimination of toxins from the system, so vigorous exercise, saunas, steam baths, and especially far-infrared saunas are especially effective. Just be sure to shower off after sweating to rinse the sweat from the skin so the toxins it contains are not reabsorbed back into the body. Rebounding on a mini trampoline encourages improved lymphatic function, which supports the body’s own cleansing processes. And getting some sort of bodywork like deep tissue massage, or one of my favorite modalities – cupping – is also really beneficial for helping to mobilize and offload toxic material from the body. Remember also to stay well hydrated to keep the kidneys moving, and take steps if need be to maintain regularity so solid wastes don’t end up staying in the body for any undue length of time

      Hope this helps!
