Autism Statistics Now 1 in 50: Why the Alarming Increase?

| March 20, 2013

autism_awarenessIf you’ve followed this blog for any length of time, you know that what interests me most is the investigation and understanding the underlying root causes of ill health, and finding ways of addressing and resolving them.

So today when I read that the CDC had recently released its latest data indicating that the rate of US school aged children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is now estimated to be 1 in 50, (or 2%) my first impulse was to ask why? Why are the statistics showing that so many more children than ever before are now being afflicted with this condition? And how can we be proactive to stem this tide?

The image at this link, which was published on the CDC’s own website almost exactly one year ago, provides some graphic and extremely troubling statistics about what appears to be an astonishingly rapidly increase in the prevalence of this disorder in the US population.

The CDC’s Reasoning

According to the CDC here:

“Most scientists who study ASDs believe there is no single cause. Studies suggest that both genetic and non-genetic factors play a role in developing an ASD. Studies also suggest the following:

  • Children born to older parents are at slightly higher risk.

  • A small percentage of children who are born prematurely or with low birth weight are at greater risk for having ASDs.

  • Some harmful drugs taken during pregnancy have been linked with a higher risk of ASDs; for example, the prescription drugs thalidomide and valproic acid.”

As you can see, the CDC does not offer a very concrete idea about the true, underlying causes for the shocking numbers above.

Some Possible Explanations

It does seem true that there is no one single cause of ASDs.

Here are some possibilities in terms of causal factors:

Gut dysbiosis – Most all who present with symptoms of ASD suffer concurrently from some form of digestive difficulties and gastrointestinal distress which may be related to a severe imbalance in what would otherwise be a healthy population of gut flora.

The rampant use of antibiotics in the general population, and the lack of regular consumption of microbe rich fermented and culture foods in our diet are two factors that may be playing significant roles in this disruption of a normal, healthy intestinal microbiome.

Russian physician Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, author of Gut and Psychology Syndrome, (GAPS) proposes that chronic long term imbalances in healthy gut flora, which can begin virtually at birth, can be a significant factor in ASDs.

Her research suggests that beneficial bacteria in the gut not only assist the body in proper digestion, but that they also help to form a barrier within the intestinal tract that prevents potentially harmful substances, such as large undigested particles of food, toxins and heavy metals from entering into the bloodstream.

Campbell-McBride says that gut dysbiosis creates a ‘leaky gut syndrome,’ which allows toxicity to pass from the digestive tract, into the bloodstream, and into the brain, where it can trigger neurological malfunctions.

Here’s a video of Dr. NCM giving a presentation on this subject:

Vaccines – There amount of vaccines being recommended for babies and young children these days is unprecedented, and these is a growing amount of evidence that babies and children who were perfectly normal prior to being vaccinated suddenly began showing signs of ASD very soon afterward.

This is a very controversial subject. However one thing that is clear is that there have been and continue to be vaccines being manufactured that contain thimerosal, which is a form of the highly poisonous heavy metal mercury. And the evidence is irrefutable that mercury is a powerful neurotoxin.

Some vaccines also contain another heavy metal, aluminum, as well as formaldehyde, both of which are also toxic to human beings.

Here’s a link to a video of Dr. Joe Mercola interviewing Dr. Andrew Wakefield, who published some very controversial research indicating a link between vaccines and ASD:

Environmental Contamination – According to the World Wildlife Fund:

“Between 1930 and 2000 global production of man-made chemicals increased from 1 million to 400 million tonnes each year.”

The disturbing truth is that thousands upon thousands if different synthetic petrochemicals have been released into the biosphere during the past century, and no one on earth knows the full repercussions with regard to their impact on human health.

Drastic Depletion of Soils and Degradation of the Food Chain – Industrialization of agriculture has resulted in vast tracts of dead, despoiled and radically depleted soils in which much of today’s food, both for human and animal consumption, is being grown.

The debasement of our soils has had a direct and very detrimental effect on the nutrient density of much of the food available to us today. This, combined with the fact that much of the food available in stores and restaurants today is highly processed and nutrient sparse, has created an epidemic of malnutrition in our culture.

Since our bodies rely on high quality nourishment to maintain good health and to bear healthy children, the compromised state of our food supply is a significant factor in our collective health.

What Can We Do?

Some suggestions for preventing the rising incidence of ASDs and caring as best we can for ourselves and our loved ones going forward are to:

  • Avoid routine use of antibiotics

  • Regularly include microbe rich fermented and cultured foods in your diet

  • Do your own thorough investigations of vaccines, their history, their safety and their efficacy, particularly for newborns, babies and toddlers, before allowing these pharmaceutical products to be routinely injected into your children.

  • Be proactive about detoxifying your body

  • Seek out the most wholesome, nourishing, nutrient dense foods for yourself and your family – preferably those that are grown and/or raised locally, organically and seasonally.
